5-Day Basque Country Itinerary
Five days can give you two city bases, a coast excursion and time for food without turning the trip into a checklist. This suggested route starts in Bilbao and finishes in San Sebastián; reverse it when that fits your flights better.

Before you book: five days versus five nights
The overnight split below assumes five nights: two in Bilbao and three in San Sebastián. If your trip is five calendar days with only four nights, shorten the final day and use two nights in each city. Arrival and departure times matter more than the headline trip length.
This is an independent itinerary with optional guided activities, not an all-inclusive five-day package. Book accommodation and transport separately. Choose fixed activities only after checking that your flight and transfer times leave a realistic margin.
Day 1: arrive in Bilbao and find your bearings
Keep arrival day close to the city. Walk through Casco Viejo, stop for food and take a manageable stretch of the riverfront if time allows. The Bilbao travel guide helps you orient yourself; the walking tour guide is useful if you prefer a guided introduction.
Leave the evening flexible. A Bilbao food tour can introduce local bar culture, but book it only when your arrival is early enough. After a late flight, a simple meal near your accommodation is a better fit than rushing to a fixed meeting point.
Day 2: choose a Bilbao culture day or a Bizkaia coast day
For a city day, make the Guggenheim visit the main event and keep time for the riverfront. Add the San Mamés stadium experience if football is a priority, checking the selected visit time.
For a coast day, use the Gaztelugatxe, Mundaka and Gernika guide instead of the museum plan. Check the official Gaztelugatxe access rules if visiting independently, or confirm how an access reservation is handled on the tour.
Choose one of these day formats. Combining a full regional excursion with multiple museum bookings leaves little room for the journey or a relaxed evening.
Day 3: transfer to San Sebastián and enjoy the bay
Travel to San Sebastián, check in and use the remainder of the day for La Concha and the old town. Check bus and train options for your date; our car-free travel guide explains what to compare.
Make this the lightest sightseeing day. If you arrive early, the San Sebastián walking tour is an option, but avoid booking it so close to the transfer that a delay becomes stressful. Leave the evening for dinner and an unhurried first look at Parte Vieja.
Day 4: food and culture in San Sebastián
Spend the morning exploring locally rather than travelling out of the city again. Use the San Sebastián guide to choose between the waterfront, neighbourhood walks and a slower café morning.
Choose one food experience for the afternoon or evening: a pintxos tour in the city or a traditional cider-house visit. Check the meal inclusions and transport arrangement before making another restaurant reservation. Two substantial food activities on the same day may be more than you want.
If being on the water matters more than a food tour, compare the San Sebastián boat guide and keep the food plan independent. Sailing depends on the operator’s schedule and conditions.
Day 5: the Gipuzkoa coast, or a wine-focused alternative
For a varied coast day, compare a guided excursion to Zarautz, Getaria and Zumaia. Read the Zumaia geopark guide if you want more time interpreting the landscape rather than a short scenic stop.
For wine, substitute the Getaria txakoli visit. An inland Rioja Alavesa excursion is another option, but reserve the whole day and check your selected departure city.
If this is also departure day, make it a local morning instead. A half-day tour is still a fixed commitment with travel on both ends; do not assume it will fit before an afternoon flight. The fifth-day excursion works best when you have the fifth night or depart the following day.
How to adapt the route
Food-first trip
Keep the San Sebastián nights and choose txakoli or a cider house. Leave a coastal stop optional rather than stacking tastings.
Culture-first trip
Keep Day 2 in Bilbao. Use Day 5 for another city morning or a shorter outing rather than the longest excursion.
One-base trip
Stay in the city that best fits your evenings. Accept that you will see fewer places, and use selected excursions for the wider region.
Check accommodation availability, transport, tour dates and the weather before fixing the order. Keep an indoor or city option for a day when outdoor conditions are poor.
Optional guided experience
Compare the Day 5 coast excursion
The Zarautz, Getaria and Zumaia tour is one optional activity for this itinerary. It is a single excursion, not the entire five-day trip; accommodation and city transfers are separate.

A practical morning, afternoon and evening split
Use the sequence below as a planning template. The time blocks are our suggested allocation; they are not fixed opening hours or a bookable package. Move museum and tour blocks to the slots available on your dates.
- Day 1: after arrival, orient yourself in Bilbao’s Casco Viejo. Use the afternoon for the riverfront if you have enough time, then eat near your accommodation or in the old town. Keep a late-arrival version to dinner and a short local walk.
- Day 2: give the Guggenheim your main morning block and reserve the afternoon for another city interest. Alternatively, take the full Bizkaia coast excursion and leave the evening free. Keep these as two alternative day plans.
- Day 3: transfer between cities, check in, then walk along La Concha. Spend the evening in Parte Vieja. Search the date in PESA’s planner before booking an afternoon activity.
- Day 4: keep the morning in San Sebastián and book one food experience for later. Choose a pintxos tour for bar-hopping context or a cider-house experience for a substantial meal; keep transport time in the second option’s schedule.
- Day 5: choose the coordinated coast excursion, an independent Zumaia visit, or a dedicated Getaria wine day. Make one the main event. If you leave the region that afternoon, replace the excursion with a local morning.
What should be booked, and what can stay flexible?
Fix accommodation, any timed museum entry, your selected tasting or tour, and the city transfer first. Keep waterfront walks, café stops and optional viewpoints flexible around those commitments. A useful booking order is arrival and departure transport, accommodation, the one activity most important to you, then the remaining city days.
What to leave out on a first five-day trip
Keep Rioja Alavesa as a deliberate replacement for another full excursion day if inland wine is your priority. Do not append it to an already busy coast day. Likewise, choose one substantial food booking on Day 4 rather than combining a complete cider-house meal with a second food tour. The purpose of this route is to give you time in two city bases and one wider landscape, with space for meals and the journeys between them.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a bookable five-day package?

Can I follow the route without renting a car?
Yes. Use public transport for the city transfer and compare organised transport for rural or multi-stop excursions. Check the services for your dates.
