Why Bilbao?

Bilbao is the story of a city that looked its own decline in the face and chose architecture over nostalgia. When the steel mills closed and the shipyards fell silent in the 1980s, Bilbao commissioned Frank Gehry to build a museum on the polluted, post-industrial riverbank. The result — the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, opened in 1997 — became one of the most discussed buildings of the 20th century, and the transformation it catalysed became a model studied in urban planning schools worldwide.

That reinvention sits on top of a much older city. The Casco Viejo, founded in 1300, is a medieval grid of narrow streets and churches that has been eating, drinking, and arguing about football continuously for seven centuries. The Ensanche, built in the 19th century on the wealth of the Basque iron industry, is one of the finest examples of bourgeois urban planning in Spain. And the Nervión estuary — the river that built the city and whose banks the Guggenheim now occupies — still connects Bilbao to the sea and to its industrial past.

Beyond the city limits, the Basque Country offers some of the most dramatic coastal and cultural landscapes in Spain: the clifftop hermitage of Gaztelugatxe (Game of Thrones' Dragonstone), the UNESCO fishing village of Mundaka, the memory-laden town of Guernica, and the elegant city of San Sebastián — all within 90 minutes of central Bilbao.

How to Plan Your Bilbao Visit

Each card above links to a dedicated experience guide with full descriptions, verified ratings, practical tips, and direct booking links to GetYourGuide. Every recommended tour has been researched with real review data — ratings and review counts are current as of April 2026.

First visit, 2-3 days? Start with the walking tour on arrival day for city orientation, book the food tour for the evening, and give a full day to the Guggenheim VIP tour combined with the San Mamés stadium tour.

Staying 4-5 days? Add both day trips: the Gaztelugatxe, Mundaka & Guernica route into the Basque coast and interior, and the San Sebastián, Hondarribia & Getaria route along the Gipuzkoa coast. The Nervión boat tour makes a relaxed half-morning between other activities.

Football focus? The San Mamés tour is essential — but check the Athletic Club fixture calendar before you go. Attending a match adds a dimension to the city that no tour can replicate.

Learning Spanish? All our experience guides connect to private Spanish lessons — and Bilbao is also an excellent opportunity to encounter Basque (Euskara), one of the world's linguistic mysteries: a language with no known relatives, spoken by 700,000 people in the hills above the Bay of Biscay.
