Why Head East of San Sebastián
Most visitors to San Sebastián spend their time in the city itself — La Concha, the Old Town, the pintxos bars. The city earns that attention. But the Basque coast east of Donostia contains a different kind of landscape: fishing villages that don't cater to tourism, a mountain road with views across two countries, and a bay so sheltered and strange that it feels like a set from another century.
Hondarribia, San Juan, and San Pedro are all within 20 kilometres of San Sebastián. Independent travel is possible, but slow by public transport and easy to get wrong without context. The guide on this half-day tour is the difference between seeing three places and understanding what you're looking at — the border history, the fishing economy, the literary connection at San Juan, and the logic of why these villages ended up looking the way they do.
Stop 1: Hondarribia
Hondarribia sits at the mouth of the Bidasoa river, directly across from the French town of Hendaye. It has been a fortified border post for most of its history — the walls and the castle of Charles V still stand — and also one of the most important fishing ports in Gipuzkoa.
The town has two distinct faces. The upper old town is enclosed within 16th-century walls, its streets lined with stone palaces and the Gothic church of Santa María de la Asunción y del Manzano. The lower La Marina district, between the walls and the port, is an entirely different mood: narrow streets, wooden balconies painted in yellow and red, flower boxes, and the smell of the sea. The contrast between the two is the best introduction to the town.
Castle of Charles V
The 10th-century fortress rebuilt by Charles V in the 16th century. Now a parador — one of Spain's historic state hotels — but the exterior and ramparts are open to view.
Santa María de la Asunción
The Gothic church at the heart of the walled upper town, with a Baroque portal added in the 18th century. The interior contains notable altarpieces from multiple periods.
La Marina District
The fishermen's quarter below the walls — brightly painted wooden balconies, narrow lanes, and the port beyond. One of the most photographed streetscapes in Gipuzkoa.
Bidasoa Estuary
The river mouth that forms the Spanish-French border. From the port, Hendaye is visible across the water — the boundary between two countries, marked by nothing but the width of the river.
Stop 2: Mount Jaizkibel Viewpoint
Between Hondarribia and the Bay of Pasaia, the tour ascends Mount Jaizkibel — the long headland that separates the Bidasoa estuary from the rest of the Basque coast. The road climbs through forest to a viewpoint at over 500 metres above the sea.
The view from the top is one of the most complete on the entire Basque coast. East, you can see Hondarribia and the estuary, Hendaye on the French side, and the French Basque coast beyond. West, on clear days, the bay of La Concha and the skyline of San Sebastián. Below, the Atlantic stretches to the horizon. The Jaizkibel road is also part of the original Camino del Norte — the coastal pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.

The Bay of Pasaia is one of the most naturally sheltered anchorages on the Basque coast — a deep, narrow inlet enclosed by steep hills, with two villages facing each other across the water. San Juan (Pasai Donibane) on the west shore is effectively a single stone-paved street pressed against the hillside, with houses rising directly from the water. San Pedro (Pasai San Pedro) on the east shore is quieter, more working-class, with smoky grills by the quay and fishing boats moored at the dock.
Victor Hugo spent the summer of 1843 in San Juan and wrote about the village at length. His house — now a museum — still stands on the main street. The literary connection is genuine and the guide uses it to frame the broader story of the Basque coast's relationship with the Atlantic world.
The crossing between San Juan and San Pedro is made by a small passenger boat — a few minutes across the bay. It's a short ride that carries a disproportionate sense of arrival: stepping off onto the San Pedro quay feels like entering a place that doesn't expect visitors. That's because, mostly, it doesn't.
San Juan (Pasai Donibane)
Single-street village of stone houses on the western shore. Victor Hugo's summer house, narrow passageways, and views back across the bay to San Pedro. The guide covers the village's maritime history and its role in the Basque fishing economy.
Boat crossing
Small passenger ferry across the bay — a few minutes, weather permitting. One of the most atmospheric transitions on any tour in the Basque Country.
San Pedro (Pasai San Pedro)
The eastern shore village — quieter, more local, with grills by the quay and fishing boats in the water. Time to explore independently before the guide collects the group for the return to San Sebastián.

Practical Tips
- Hotel pickup included The guide collects you from your hotel lobby — or street level for apartments. Confirm your pickup address at booking.
- Minibus bilingual option Available on Thursdays and Sundays. Fixed meeting point at Café KOH TAO, Bengoetxea street #2, San Sebastián. Requires minimum 4 adults.
- Boat crossing is weather-dependent The San Juan–San Pedro boat runs in good conditions. In poor weather, the crossing may be replaced by an alternative route between the villages.
- Minimum 2 adults required The standard tour needs at least 2 participants. If the minimum isn't met, you'll be contacted at least 3 days in advance to arrange an alternative date.
- Best as a morning tour The half-day format works well in the morning — you're back in San Sebastián in time for lunch and an afternoon in the city.
- Wear layers in spring and autumn The Jaizkibel viewpoint sits above 500 metres. Even when San Sebastián is warm, the mountain can be cool and windy. A light jacket is useful most of the year.
